Basic Blackjack Terms

Blackjack is a popular card game that is played at both land based and online casinos.  The game of blackjack is sometimes referred to as 21 blackjack because the objective of the game is centered on reaching the number 21.  Receiving two cards totaling 21 on the first deal is called a natural blackjack and cannot be beaten, but can be tied by the dealer.  If neither the player nor the dealer receives a 21 on the first deal, the player at the end of the game who is closest to 21 without exceeding it will win.

Although the premise of blackjack is simple, the actual game can be quite complicated, involving many player options and side bet opportunities.  In order to make sense of blackjack play, a specific set of jargon has developed over its history to help describe blackjack game processes.  Experienced blackjack players are familiar with these terms and use them often during blackjack tournament play.  In my opinion, it is worthwhile for all blackjack players to familiarize themselves with these descriptions and phrases to play in the heart of the game.

Having a basic knowledge also helps new players gain insight into blackjack strategy in two different ways.  First, is the knowledge that is gained to a thorough understanding of the game of blackjack and all of its rules.  Without knowing these simple terms, players who play the game of blackjack cannot possibly understand and take advantage of all of their blackjack betting options.  In addition, picking up a working knowledge of the lingo is also crucial for enthusiasts looking to become serious blackjack players.  Participating in conversations with more advanced blackjack players about blackjack tips will be greatly improved with a working knowledge of blackjack vocabulary.

Basic blackjack terminology begins with a player roster.  Although the table holds many players, each player only competes against the dealer.  The dealer is the casino representative responsible for dealing the cards.  In backjack play, the other players are sometimes referred to as basemen.  Thus, the first baseman is the player on the dealer’s left who is first to play while the third baseman or anchorman is the last player to act.

Each blackjack player has up to four basic blackjack options after the first two cards are dealt.  The first option is to stand and keep the same cards.  The second option is to hit, receiving one additional card to add to the in-hand card total.  The third option is only suitable for players who receive a dealt pair like 8-8.  This is called a split and allows the blackjack player to create two separate hands out of the pair, receiving another hit to each card.  The last option avaiable is the double down.  This option involves doubling the original beta and taking a hit of one card and standing on the three cards until the end of the game.
